UK battery farm eggs to be banned by 2012

Battery hens in Suffolk
Britain is to press ahead with a ban on battery-farmed eggs by 2012
This BBC news item reports that the government in Britain has confirmed that will press ahead with outlawing the production of battery-farmed eggs by 2012.

Such a barbaric way to farm these hapless chickens and produce eggs. Apparently, the RSPCA say that each battery hen is crammed into a space which is often smaller than an A4 sheet of paper.

It has taken an inordinately long time to get this far in the UK - "...more compassionate production was the way forward."
When will NZ become more compassionate towards the farming of these creatures?
